Shield Pest Management is an independent, family-run pest control business based in Selby, working with food, logistics, hospitality, healthcare and public-sector sites across Yorkshire and the North. BS EN 16636 certified through CEPA, a BPCA member and CHAS accredited, with every visit recorded for the standard your auditor expects.
Our Story
Keith Tiplady started Shield in Selby in 2002 as a sole trader, and in 2012 the business became Shield Environmental Solutions (Selby) Ltd, trading as Shield Pest Management. It is still independent and family-run, and the customer who signed Shield’s first contract in 2002 is still a customer today.
The work has moved steadily towards commercial, audit-led pest management. In 2026 Shield’s technicians will attend around 3,700 calls across some 375 sites, and Shield supports food manufacturers and suppliers working to the standards required by some of the UK’s leading retailers and brands.
Our Team
A small, directly employed team rather than a national call centre. The same technician looks after your site, and the business is run by the family that started it.
Managing Director. Keith started Shield in 2002 and still leads it. RSPH Level 2 qualified and BPCA registered, he carries out every free audit review.
Shield is family-run, with the Tiplady family covering management, accounts and operations, so the people accountable for your contract are easy to reach.
Five technicians, all employed by Shield rather than subcontracted, so the person who knows your site is the one who comes back, visit after visit.
Surveys and risk assessments are led by BPCA certified field biologists, the qualification behind every site survey and programme Shield writes.
Every technician holds RSPH Level 2, is BPCA registered and DBS checked, which matters on school, hospital and care sites with controlled access.
Technicians complete continuing professional development through BPCA every year, keeping their methods, legislation and product knowledge current.
BPCA and BS EN 16636
What BS EN 16636 is. BS EN 16636 is the European standard for professional pest management services. It sets out how a provider should assess a site, identify the pest and the risk, choose proportionate methods, protect people and the environment, and record and report what it has done.
How Shield is certified. Shield is certified to BS EN 16636 through CEPA Certified, the scheme run by the Confederation of European Pest Management Associations after an independent assessment.
What it means for your contract. Food safety standards and retailer codes expect a pest control contractor to be competent and to work to a recognised professional standard. A BS EN 16636 certified provider gives your auditor that assurance in a single line of your contractor file.
BPCA membership. Shield is a member of the British Pest Control Association and can be checked in the BPCA directory. Technicians complete their CPD through BPCA, and site surveys are led by BPCA certified field biologists.

Certified to use aluminium phosphide, a restricted fumigant that only trained and certificated operators may use, for specialist outdoor burrow treatments.
Pest Management
Your site is looked after by one directly employed technician who learns the building, the perimeter and the people, rather than whoever happens to be free that week.
Every visit, device reading, recommendation and corrective action is recorded in Insectram and visible to your team the same day, ready for any audit or inspection.
Proofing, housekeeping and monitoring come before any chemical, and Shield carries out all of the proofing work itself rather than only recommending it to someone else.
Phone and WhatsApp are answered 24 hours a day, including weekends, and emergencies at commercial sites are covered by a 24-hour call-out across the whole region.
