When to Call
A rat seen in a kitchen during service, cockroaches found in a food store, a wasp nest over a busy entrance, or birds trapped inside a production area. If a pest puts food safety, people or your ability to trade at risk, call straight away rather than waiting for the next routine visit.
The same applies when an audit or an environmental health inspection is close and activity has been found. An emergency visit deals with the pest, records what was done and gives you evidence that the finding has been acted on.
Emergency Situations
Most emergency calls fall into a handful of situations. Each one is treated as a risk to food safety, people or trading, and dealt with before it becomes a closure or an audit failure.
Rats or mice seen in a kitchen, production area or food store, or fresh droppings found on a pre-opening check. The area is assessed and made safe first.
Cockroaches found in a kitchen, plant room or delivery, often at night. Monitoring and gel baiting start at once, with the area mapped to find the source.
Active nests over doorways, loading bays, beer gardens or pedestrian routes, treated promptly so staff, customers and deliveries can move safely again.
Pigeons or gulls trapped in a warehouse, production hall or atrium, removed humanely, with the entry point found and the fouling cleared from food areas.
A fly surge in a kitchen or production area, or insects found in raw materials or finished goods. The source is traced before any product is released.
Pest activity found days before an audit or inspection. The visit deals with it and records the corrective action an auditor or EHO will ask to see.
What Happens When You Call

The first job is to contain it. On site, the technician makes the affected area safe, advises on which food or stock should be held or disposed of, and treats in proportion to the risk rather than reaching for the strongest option first.
Everything is written down. Findings, treatment, the product used, the areas affected and the advice given are recorded at the visit, so there is a record to show an EHO, an auditor or a customer that the problem was acted on and when.
Then the cause is dealt with. An emergency usually has an entry point or a condition behind it. Proofing and follow-up visits close it, so the same call is not needed next month, and the site can move onto a planned programme.
